Utah Disease Control Guide

Anthracnose - (This disease destroys leaf tissue, follows veins into branches)
  • Oak and Maple Anthracnose - Spray trees in spring at bud break (April). 2 sprays 2 weeks apart with Daconil, Copper Fungicide, Flowable Sulfer, or similar fungicide. A systemic fungicide, such as Alamo, may be used on very large trees. More Info

  • Sycamore Anthracnose - Spray smaller trees in spring at bud break 2 sprays 2 weeks apart with fungicide. Systemic fungicide should be used on larger trees in spring, or in fall a combination fungicide/insecticide can be used to control both anthracnose and sycamore plant bugs. More Info

Coryneum Blight - (This disease destroys leaf tissue, buds, fruit and twigs)

Fungus disease that affects stone fruits and ornamental stone fruits. Also called shot hole fungus, initial symptom is small circular holes in the leaves, spreading to disfiguring spots on fruit and cankering of twigs and shoots. 2 sprays 2 weeks apart at bud break with fungicide.

Fireblight - (This disease harms the tree or shrub)

Bacterial disease that affects rose, apple, pear, mountain ash, hawthorn, and cotoneaster. At blossom, flowers turn brown and wilt, twigs shrivel and turn black, with ends often curling. 2 sprays 2 weeks apart with bactericide such as streptomycin at bud break.

Leaf Spot Fungus - (This disease stresses the tree)

Aspen Leaf Spot Fungus - causes brown or black spotting on leaves and can lead to early leaf drop. Spray trees in spring at bud break. 2-3 sprays 2 weeks apart in spring at bud break with fungicide.

Needle Cast Fungus - (This disease harms the tree)

Spruce and Pine needle cast fungus – drought and stress encourages this fungus. Spray trees in spring at bud break, 2 sprays 2-3 weeks apart wit fungicide.

Powdery Mildew - (This disease harms the tree or shrub)

White fungus that grows on the leaves and stems of trees such as Sycamore and apple, and shrubs such as rose, euonymus, and lilac among others. Spray trees starting in spring or at first sign of fungus. Fungus often shows up in spring and again in late summer/early fall. 2 sprays in spring and 2 in summer sometimes needed.

Scab Fungus - (This disease harms the tree)

Fungus disease on apples and pears, causing spots on the leaves, and spots and disfiguring of the fruit. Spray tree in spring at bud break, 2-3 sprays 2 weeks apart with fungicide.
