ArborCare-ArborScape Information (Sycamore Anthracnose)
|
What is Sycamore Anthracnose? Sycamore Anthracnose is caused by the fungus Gnomia Leptostyla. This tends to attack mostly in the American Sycamore and California Sycamore. It tends to attack during the cooler temperatures and prolonged leaf wetness, making it more severe in cold, wet springs. The fungus activity does decrease in warmer temperatures, especially during hot, dry summers.
What Can Anthracnose do to My Sycamore? The spores of the fungus begin by infecting the enlarging buds and shoots of the sycamore in the early spring. At the spring bud break, scorching and wilting of new shoots and leaves may occur. Fully grown leaves show elongated tan to brown lesions parallel with midribs and veins.
The fungus of Sycamore Anthracnose overwinters in leaf debris and cankers on the bark. The small, black fruiting bodies form in the dead bark can often be seen on the one-year shoots. Spores form in the fruiting bodies and are spread mostly by splashing rain. Once the spores infect the buds and shoots, it colonizes the leaves and produces new fruiting structures and spores.
What Can I do to Control Sycamore Anthracnose?
Sycamore Anthracnose is rarely serious enough to need a strong control regimen. However, year after year infection of a tree can increase susceptibility to other diseases and insects.
There are a variety of cultural practices that greatly help control Sycamore Anthracnose. One of the most important ones is removing the leaves in the fall. This will greatly reduce the amount of fungus since it overwinters in the leaf debris. Also, watering and fertilizing to keep the tree healthy is important. When planting new trees, they should be spaced well to allow good air circulation. This will decrease the amount of time the leaves are wet. Also, there are varieties that are believed to be resistant to Sycamore Anthracnose, including London Plane Tree.
A variety of fungicides are available to help control Sycamore Anthracnose. Proper timing and thorough coverage are extremely important. The first application should be done in the spring at bud swell, with two to three applications following approximately two weeks apart. Systemic injections are also available. Holes are drilled into the tree and the chemical is injected to be carried through the water-conducting system of the tree. This type of application should be done for at least two consecutive years.
